Yep! We Are #1! According to Volunteer In America www.volunteeringinamerica.gov , the Twin Cities Metro ranked number one in the highest volunteerism rate this year. 38.4% of Twin Cities residents volunteer! Minnesota, state-wide, ranks # 3 (behind Utah & Nebraska) in the country. That being said, yes we may be #1, but at the same time we can always get better, right? And we at TheWorkmanshipGroups are trying to add a new dimension to volunteer opportunities. Rather than just trying to inc... Continue reading...

I have found, in conversation with others, that we all have different reasons for volunteering and for serving others. For some it is simply done out of a sense of duty. For others, it is the desire to be recognized (which, funny, few people will ever admit to). Also, many people feel that they can grow, as a human being, through serving others. And still others need to serve because they feel the need to repent for their own past actions. So, they believe that by giving back, rather tha... Continue reading...

Over the weekend while I wlked around a bit and passed out flyers describing TheWorkmanshipGroups and, more specifically, The "Friend of a Friend" Group, I was hit with a thought: What if the work I and others have done in order to make TWG a reality just isn't really something many people find exciting? What if I have just really paid way too much attention to what I would be interested in rather than othor's interests? Is that a possibility? Of Course it is a posibility. So..with that fea... I've gotten more than a few requests from people who want more concrete examples of what the "vision" for TheWorkmanshipGroups is. Now, I have to be completely honest and say that there have been few things as challenging as putting the purpose and mission of our group into a nice, neat, and conscise sentence or two. So I'm going to give it a try again, but THIS TIME I am going to draw a scenario or two. And who knows? Maybe by doing this I will finally be given that nice, neat, conscise ... Continue reading...

Today I found a very interesting site which I'm sure some of you have come across. It's called GoodSearch, and it is a search engine, powered by Yahoo!, which donates 50% of it's revenue to the charitable organization of your choosing. How simple, yet effective! I am mentioning this for a couple of reasons-number one, I am impressed by it, of course. And number two, this endeavor is a perfect example of thinking uniquely and personally about how we can best be of service to those who need u... Continue reading...

As promised in my post from a few days ago, I want to share a story that has been one of the most influential and amazing stories I have ever come across. As a matter of fact, whenever I am feeliing overwhelmed or feeling that I can't accomplish what I believe I need to accomplish regarding aither TheWorkmanshipGroups, or my own, more personal, support or service to others, I only need to read this story for the "umpteenth" time to be both energized and humbled. I am positive that it will d... Continue reading...

Being that this month is Childhood Cancer Awareness month, I have found that it is important to highlight some of the realities that exist about this issue and how we, as regular people, are able to really make a difference.
- One in 330 children will develop cancer by age 20.
- Each school day, 46 children are diagnosed with cancer.
- Leukemias, which are cancers of the bone marrow and tissues which produce the circulating blood cells, are the most common childhood cancers.
- Of those, Acut...

At times lately I felt felt overwhelmed. So much to do! And I am the first to admit that I am not the most efficient or organized individual! And, because of that, I wonder if I am doing the things I should be doing. Am I wasting my time? Is it God's will? Does a small turnout at our latest meeting mean that I am wasting my time? Am I failing because of the fact that I got only half of the number of voluteers I was expecting for our last nursing home visitation? Could someone do this ... Continue reading...
